Side Return Kitchen Extension

This is a visualization of a kitchen extension in the Fulham area that we will begin in the New Year. Our architect worked closely with the client in the production of these images to ensure their satisfaction with all aspects of the design. 

A traditional London victorian terraced house has small rooms connected by dark corridor spaces. For this project we will demolish the internal partitions to create a large, light, open-plan space. We are also adding a modern side extension, with wall-to-wall glazed doors.

By merging the kitchen, dining room and lounge into a single dynamic space we will transform rooms with limited layout potential into something flexible. And by removing otherwise wasted corridor space we are creating a larger and more comfortable living area.

Wooden decking extends seamlessly from the kitchen extension to the garden, and the two spaces are separated only by a set of folding glass doors which can be opened in the warmer months to allow for external dining. The doors, even when closed, visually connect the kitchen with the garden, and make the interior feel even bigger than it actually is.

The island kitchen design maximizes preparation area without reducing the overall floor area, and also creates an informal dining space.

The conservation roof lights, located above the main preparation area, flood the kitchen with ambient light all day long, whilst direct sunlight enters through the glazed doors.  

At night, recessed spotlights softly illuminate the kitchen whilst hanging pendants highlight the island and preparation area—using this task lighting system ensures that key active spaces are lit more brightly than the circulation space, thus reducing energy consumption.
